The rise of the diva

The 80’s and 90’s saw an explosion of diva power – soulful ladies who could really belt out a tune…and live.

My lead character Pearl Sorelle is an amalgamation of my favourite soulstresses; Donna Summer, Diana Ross and, of course, my number one diva, Whitney Houston.

With the arrival of such huge, beautiful talent in the form of Whitney, Mariah and Toni Braxton, one mustn’t forget the divas of the 60’s and 70’s – Randy Crawford, Patti Labelle and the divine Gladys Knight – were still out there doing their thing and hitting the charts.
